Ann Ha is a finalist for the 2014 Rotch Travelling Scholarship
Ann is a finalist for the 2014 Rotch Travelling Scholarship, hosted by the Boston Society of Architects. The design brief for the first stage of the Scholarship Competition asked entrants to rethink the traditional notion of a "triple-decker" housing typology in Boston. In a three-day charette, entrants were asked to reconsider the typology in a way that supports the maker culture and economy. Ann's proposal, Live-Work Factory, imagines a new live-work typology which maintains the cellular condition of individual triple-decker dwelling units, but promotes community through a common, flexible, continuous, and interconnected space for production. Based on a hybridization of the triple-decker and a skip-stop living unit arrangement with a continuous spine of workspace as its horizontal core, Live-Work Factory retains the features that give the triple-decker historical and cultural significance while introducing modern loft-style dwelling units and a highly functioning and flexible factory for light-industrial and craft-based production.
